Sewanee: The University of the South
Recently, I had the privilege of serving as the primary photography contributor for a series of stories in Sewanee: The Magazine for The University of the South. Each time I visit this campus, I feel as though I’ve stepped into a hidden world—one that is both enchanting and timeless.
Nestled in the mountains between Nashville and Chattanooga, Sewanee is a quiet, picturesque town where the landscape begins to soften and wind along the interstate. The university itself is a breathtaking collection of stone buildings that evoke a sense of history, transporting you to an era long past. The moment you arrive, there’s a distinct sense of peace—a feeling that this is a place meant for deep thought, learning, and reflection.
So when I was invited to contribute to their magazine, I didn’t hesitate for a second.
While portraits were the primary focus of my assignment, I couldn’t resist capturing the stunning architecture and breathtaking sunsets that frame this remarkable place. The university’s stone facades and rich mahogany interiors provided the perfect backdrop, adding depth and character to the stories of the people who call Sewanee home.
Nature, too, was putting on a show. Though my work was for the spring issue, I visited during the fall—a season that, in many places, arrives later and lingers due to warming temperatures. But here, at this higher elevation, autumn was in full swing, painting the landscape in hues of gold and crimson, making it feel like the perfect, quintessential fall.
I’m thrilled with how this project came together and hope it gives back to the university’s community. Sharing others’ stories is what I love most—but when those stories are set in a place as magical as Sewanee, it makes the experience even more special.
